This etude is to be played in a lyrical manner. Think
"cantabile." Accents indicate emphasis without heavy tongue or
harshness. The trill in m. 14is from Bb to C and must be played as a
lip trill. This etude requires well organized and carefully planned

Performance Guide: |
The bass-clef notes in measures 3-4, 7-8, 16, and 25-26 are
written in old notation; they are to played one octave higher than
written.
The dotted eighth note turns (gruppettos) consist of four tones: the
next scale tone above the principal tone, the principal tone itself, the
tone below the principal tone, and the principal tone again. With a
turn written after a dotted note and another note having the same value
as the dot, the turn is played with the last note of the turn taking the
place of the dot, making it the same value as the sixteenth note that
follows the turn. The first three notes of the turn are traditionally
played as a triplet on the second sixteenth of the beat.
Give careful attention to the dynamics. |

Etude Title: No. 40 |
Tempo: Dotted Half Note = 54-72 |
Play from Beginning to end. |
Errata: |
M. 43 first note is D natural not D flat.
M. 58 clarification: The slur is notated as either a three note slur or
a four note slur depending on the etude edition. The selector prefers
the four note slur in this measure, but either version should be
considered correct. M. 58 may be performed with either a three note
slur or a four note slur.
M. 68 & 70 should have an accent on second quarter note in order to be the same as M. 65, 66, 72 etc.
M. 67 accent is on second quarter note not third.
M. 73 second quarter note is D natural not D flat. |
